Model UN is an activity for Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. It is based on the actual UN and high school students are assigned countries to represent in committees. It begins in September with selected countries sent out to various high schools. The adviser sets six meetings from September to late November which are mandatory in order to participate in the final assembly and committee meetings. Students research their country, and write a policy or proposal having to do with their committees: Plenary, GA 1, GA 2, GA 3 and Security council. Their papers need to be sent as a document to Model UN University of Montana by the first week of November. Our team leaves the Sunday before Thanksgiving vacation and returns the Tuesday before the vacation. Students learn to speak extemporarily, present arguments , write proposals that address key issues in their country and discover new ideas ex. Deforestation, Human Trafficking Water. Model UN staff awards students with special recognition on their paper, on their performance, on diplomacy and on knowledge. Park High School in the past has received awards and scholarships from the University based on Model UN. www.cas.umt.edu
